Fundraising for the ALS Quebec

On Sunday, February 26, the Centre Multisports André-Chagnon invites you to pedal for families affected by ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) as part of the first edition of the Défi Everest 8848 fundraiser. The goal: to raise 35 $000 for the ALS Quebec Foundation by climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest by bike on a virtual training base!

Of course, climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest by bike is quite a challenge, even for accomplished athletes, but as a team, anything is possible. In groups of seven participants, the challenge will be to accumulate the 8,848 meters of climb in a maximum of 90 minutes, i.e. an average of 1,264 meters per team member. From 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., fourteen teams will march through the Center’s Zone Vélo Perfo (ZVP) to succeed in this challenge and raise funds.

The spokesperson for the event, Jean-François Trudeau, owner of Karate Sportif in Vaudreuil-Dorion, explains why he is involved and emphasizes the importance of raising funds to overcome this terrible disease: “Like everyone, I’ve heard of this disease, but it’s only recently that I understood its seriousness. My wife’s mother has just been diagnosed with ALS. It is upsetting for the person who receives this announcement, but also for those close to him. It saddens me enormously and I told myself that I had to do something to contribute to the collective effort to find the medicine that will cure this disease ”.

Jean-François Trudeau therefore approached the Centre Multisports André-Chagnon to help organize a charity event that would mobilize the community of the Center and the population of Vaudreuil-Soulanges. Himself a seasoned cyclist, the idea of organizing a cycling challenge came about on its own. While the majority of participants will climb Everest as a team, he will do it alone: “My goal is to do a double Everest, or 17,696 meters of climb. I will start Saturday February 18 at 1pm and hope to finish around 5-6pm on Sunday. “. Last September, Jean-François finished 2nd in the Bonneville Challenge, an 808 km event that takes place in the Laurentians, which he completed in 33 hours 27 minutes.

The spokesperson invites businesses in the region to form and sponsor a team to represent them: “Businesses in the region have often demonstrated their support for important social causes. This is a great opportunity to do “team building”, but above all to help with medical research. Talking around me, I realize that this disease has affected many more people than I could have imagined. »

You can form your own group of seven cyclists, but it is not mandatory since the organization will form teams from the registrations received. Different individual or team formulas are proposed to achieve the challenge. All the details of the event are available on the Jedonneenligne.org page of ALS Quebec.

About ALS

“Currently, approximately 2,500 to 3,000 people in Canada suffer from this disease and two new cases are reported per 100,000 people each year. This disease is not contagious and most reported cases are sporadic, meaning that no member of the immediate or extended family of the person affected has had ALS. The disease is only hereditary in 5 to 10% of cases and mainly affects people aged 40 to 75; cases in children are extremely rare. To date, there is no treatment that can significantly prolong the life of patients with ALS. – Quebec ALS Society
