Which Style of Yoga Is Right for You?

With so many different styles of yoga, getting started can feel confusing. But no matter the type you choose, yoga helps improve your strength, flexibility, and balance.

Yoga releases physical tension, calms the mind, and promotes relaxation. If you're looking to try a class, here’s an overview of five major styles:

1. ASHTANGA – Athletic and Challenging

Ashtanga yoga is a traditional practice focused on progressive pose sequences synchronized with breathing. Each posture is typically held for about five breaths, and classes are usually music-free and prop-free (though exceptions exist). This method supports spinal alignment, detoxification, and builds both strength and flexibility.

2. HATHA – Gentle and Foundational

Hatha is a general term that refers to all physical yoga practices. When a class is labeled “Hatha,” it typically offers a basic level with a classic approach combining breathwork and postures. You might not sweat much, but you'll leave the session feeling more stretched, limber, and relaxed.

3. BIKRAM – Intense and Heated

Bikram yoga consists of 26 basic postures performed twice in a room heated to 40°C (104°F). This style has inspired many hot yoga trends. Consult your doctor before starting if you have conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes.

4. VINYASA (FLOW) – Fast-Paced and Energizing

Vinyasa describes classes where movements flow smoothly with breath in a rhythmic, powerful sequence. Each pose is generally held for five breaths. Expect to sweat and be challenged.

5. YIN YOGA – Slow-Paced but Deeply Effective

Yin yoga targets connective tissues (ligaments and tendons) rather than muscles. Poses are passive and held for five minutes or more, often using props. This style promotes stillness and deep relaxation.

To get the most out of your yoga experience, choose a style that aligns with your current fitness level, personality, and wellness goals. Try different classes and instructors to find what works best for you. At first, you may feel awkward or out of place. But the confidence and energy you’ll gain—with the support of your yoga community—will far outweigh those early growing pains.
