Spotlight on Youth
Our world is filled with people who shine like beacons—those who seem to possess the ability to cast a light on inequality and illuminate pathways to justice. These individuals are born to change the world, either entirely or in small, meaningful ways. Their legacy is etched in the depth of the causes they defend and promote. Anyone who has followed the journey of businessman Claude Chagnon can attest to his unwavering commitment to transforming the world by starting at its roots—where children are.
A man steadfast in his devotion to youth well-being, Chagnon remains focused on fighting poverty, promoting education, and encouraging community engagement. The numerous projects initiated and supported by the Lucie and André Chagnon Foundation, which he chairs, as well as his loyal support for regional and national initiatives, all bear the stamp of child development and holistic academic success. It's no surprise that he played a pivotal role when the idea of building a first-class sports complex for the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region first took shape.
Sports as a Key to Success
“Playing sports is not only good for your health—it also helps develop life skills and personal qualities that stay with you forever,” says Claude Chagnon when asked about the role sports have played in his life. “As a kid, I realized that, a bit like Obelix, by falling into the pot.” This vivid metaphor, shared while walking the long corridors of the Centre Multisports, sets the tone for the conversation that follows.
Sports have always been part of his daily life, just as his dedication to youth well-being seems deeply embedded in his DNA. When his father sold Vidéotron in 2000—a company he founded in 1964—the Lucie and André Chagnon Foundation was born, continuing the family’s strong philanthropic tradition. Today, it is Canada’s largest private foundation, and it supports health advancement by focusing on poverty and illness prevention.
Armed with this mission and sense of purpose, Claude Chagnon led the bid to bring the 2010 Quebec Summer Games Finals to Vaudreuil-Dorion. Around 50 community leaders from all sectors joined in the effort, recognizing that the region lacked a central sports hub for the general population and for elite athletes. “Now we had a driving force to move physical activity and health forward in Vaudreuil-Soulanges,” Chagnon proudly states, from his home in Vaudreuil-sur-le-Lac.
