The Four-Dimensional Power (4DP) test from The Sufferfest's Perfo Bike Zone program was developed in collaboration with sport scientists at APEX Coaching to evaluate the four key energy systems used in cycling:
- Neuromuscular Power (NM)
- Maximal Aerobic Power (MAP)
- Anaerobic Capacity (AC)
- Functional Threshold Power (FTP)
Named Full Frontal, this comprehensive test paints a far more complete picture of your cycling profile than a standard 20-minute FTP test. The Sufferfest app analyzes your Full Frontal results and reveals what type of cyclist you are.
Sprinter
When you stand up on the pedals and explode into a sprint, few riders can keep your wheel. Even when riding with others at your level, you can break away with short, intense bursts. You have sprinter DNA.
But like any rocket, your fuel is limited—save it for the finale. Sprinting is driven by Neuromuscular Power (NM), measured during the two five-second efforts in the Full Frontal test.
Pro sprinters: Marcel Kittel, Fernando Gaviria, Mark Cavendish, Coryn Rivera.
Attacker
You thrive in short, explosive efforts and recover quickly between bursts. You may not win every attack, but you’re always ready to respond. This profile is linked to Anaerobic Capacity (AC)—your ability to refill the tank and go again.
The one-minute max-effort at the end of Full Frontal reveals what you’ve got left after all the previous intervals.
Pro attackers: Philippe Gilbert, Lizzie Deignan, Alejandro Valverde, Julian Alaphilippe.
Pursuiter
If you can go all-out for five minutes and hold the pace, you're tough to drop. You may lack the punch of sprinters or the steady power of diesel riders, but your Maximal Aerobic Power (MAP) is top-notch.
The five-minute segment of Full Frontal is where you shine.
Pro pursuiters: Taylor Phinney, Stefan Küng, Sarah Hammer.
Time Trialist
You're the engine of the train, pulling with relentless, unwavering power. When you're up front, you put in the overtime.
Your strength lies in sustained, high-intensity efforts powered by Functional Threshold Power (FTP).
The 20-minute portion of Full Frontal is your battlefield.
Pro time trialists: Tony Martin, Rohan Dennis, Kristin Armstrong.
Climber
When the road tilts upward, you come alive. You float on the climbs while others gasp for air. Let the heavier riders handle the flats—your place is on the slopes.
Climbing is about your power-to-weight ratio—the more watts per kilo you generate, the better you defy gravity.
Pro climbers: Fabio Aru, Nairo Quintana, Kasia Niewiadoma.
All-Rounder
You're a rare unicorn—a jack-of-all-trades cyclist who can handle any terrain. Whether it’s a sprint, a breakaway, or a climb, you’re always in the action.
While specialists shine in one area, you bring versatility and consistency.
Pro all-rounders: Peter Sagan, Megan Guarnier, Marianne Vos, Tom Dumoulin.
What About You?
If one of these profiles sounds familiar, it doesn’t mean you’ve reached your peak—it just reflects your natural tendencies.
Once you know your profile, you can focus on strengthening your strengths, improving weaknesses, or even shifting your style (within reason—you can’t change your genes like a jersey!).
The Full Frontal test gives personalized recommendations and highlights which workouts will help you improve specific power zones (NM, MAP, FTP, AC).
At the ZVP, we offer weekly workouts rated by a star system (★ ★ ★ ★ ★) to show which type of power each workout targets.
No more guesswork—we do the hard part. All you have to do… is suffer!
