Declining Fitness Levels Among Youth
A recent study conducted by American researchers reveals that a high number of children today have lower cardiovascular fitness compared to their parents at the same age. These researchers analyzed over 50 studies on running, conducted between 1964 and 2010 across 28 countries. The findings are clear: today's children perform worse in 15-minute runs or over distances ranging from 800 meters to 3 kilometers. Year after year, over the last 50 years, youth cardiovascular endurance has been steadily declining.
The studies also show that this decline affects both boys and girls, aged 9 to 17, and is consistent across all regions of the world examined. For the first time in history, we are facing the most sedentary generation of children ever known. Poor cardiovascular health in youth is a known precursor to future health issues.
One of the leading causes? The overuse of digital devices — tablets, smartphones, video games — acting like virtual lead shoes, keeping kids stuck to their screens. How many hours a week does your child spend glued to a device?
A Collective Responsibility
The situation can and must be improved, and doing so requires collaboration between multiple stakeholders: parents, of course, but also school administrators and municipal authorities. They can play a crucial role by creating environments that encourage physical activity, whether through organized programs or physical infrastructure.
It’s never too late to change lifestyle habits. If we want the next generation to include at least 30 minutes of daily activity in their routine — essential to maintaining good health — we must act together.
