In an age where everything can be learned online and advice abounds on social media, one may wonder: what is the point of seeing a kinesiologist? By definition, a kinesiologist is a health professional specializing in physical activity, using movement for prevention, treatment, and performance purposes. Their main goal is to improve the health and quality of life of the clients they work with.
Since the Centre Multisports was founded, kinesiology services have been available to its members. Some people are unaware of this, others confuse them with personal trainers, while many wouldn't go without them! To better understand their value and demystify their contribution to our well-being, we spoke with members who swear by their kinesiologists and the programs they design. As the saying goes, once you try it, you’ll never go back.
And what did they tell us?
First, that having a kinesiologist provides a sense of security. Members who work with kinesiologists feel reassured knowing they are performing the right movements, in the right way, for the right reasons. “She gives me confidence and makes me feel safe,” says Cassandra, who lives with ankylosing spondylitis, a form of inflammatory arthritis that affects the spine and joints. She mentions that her kinesiologist has changed her life, plain and simple. Others point out that personalized follow-ups help them feel supported and confident.
Second, that the service is tailored to the individual. Unlike programs found online, everything here is designed to suit each person's body, abilities, pace, and goals. “He listens to what I am capable of doing today,” says Odette, who meets with her kinesiologist every Friday without fail. Félix Deschymer, a Grade 11 student enrolled in a sports-study program, highlights that his personalized plan helps him improve in his favorite sport, tennis, through targeted and repetitive movements.
Kinesiology is also a deeply human service. Members speak highly of the trusting relationships they build with their kinesiologists. “He pays attention to details and is there for me when I need him,” says Martin, another member who appreciates how he is progressing with his training. Some even say they feel transformed, can’t imagine living without it, and encourage everyone to give it a try at least once.
If we had to sum up the contribution of a kinesiologist in three words?
Each member we spoke with offered three different words: ally, benefit, creativity, professional, partner, health, discipline, support, achievement, encouragement, lightness, and organized.
Kinesiology is not a luxury. It is a valuable wellness tool available right here at the Centre Multisports André-Chagnon. Whether you want to improve your physical condition, recover from an injury, enhance your sports performance, or simply move better and longer, there is a kinesiologist ready to guide you with skill, care, and kindness.
