Stress, anxiety and depression, to name but a few, are widespread and on the rise in our society.
In fact, the Mental Health Commission of Canada has stated that one in five Canadians will experience a mental health problem at least once in their lives. Moreover, the same organization points out that mental health problems are more prevalent in the Canadian population than any other chronic physical health problem[1].
Numerous studies associate physical activity with greater general well-being and better mental health management. Physical activity plays different roles in improving mental health management. Regular, even sporadic, physical activity has a number of benefits. These include helping to manage stress, boosting self-esteem, improving sleep quality and much more. On a biological level, regular physical activity improves brain connections, helps regenerate brain cells and reduces inflammation. In terms of cognitive faculties, benefits have also been observed for memory and higher cognitive functions such as analysis and information management. Finally, group physical activity also provides an additional positive feeling of socialization.
In the end, whether you're dealing with temporary problems linked to life events or an ongoing episode, or with short-lived or regular physical activity, you'll see benefits.
