Yanick Michaud, Director of Information at Viva Média, recently published a column in L’Étoile titled "They’re Tough on Me", where he shared his journey toward better health. Intrigued, we sat down with him to learn more about his motivations, challenges, and what drives his commitment.
Multisports: Yanick, your recent editorial discussed your decision to get back in shape. It sounds like it hasn’t been easy?
Yanick Michaud: It hasn’t. But after years of indulging in desserts, second helpings, and late-night cravings, I hit a wall. I needed a radical change. Since self-motivated gym routines don’t come naturally to me, I decided to work with a kinesiologist. It hurts in the moment, but I’m already feeling better.
LM: Was this a personal decision or were you “pushed” into training?
YM: My doctor told me two things: first, that I had diabetes. Second, that it wasn’t too late—I could turn things around if I took action. The choice was clear. I decided to move, and the Centre Multisports seemed like the right place to start.
LM: With your demanding and sometimes stressful work schedule, how do you manage family, work, and training?
YM: I’m lucky to have a supportive partner who also cares deeply about my health. On mornings when I train, she takes over school prep for the kids. They also cheer me on—part of my motivation is to stay healthy so I can be there for them as they grow up.
LM: You were present at the Gym Perfo grand opening last September. Did you already see yourself training there?
YM: It was love at first sight! I’d been looking for a new training method. Traditional gyms bore me quickly. Gym Perfo is different—it breaks the routine. Vincent, my kinesiologist, tailors exercises to my abilities, and I actually enjoy it. I’m never bored.
LM: What does your fitness program look like? Any favorites?
YM: It’s a varied program—lots of cardio, less strength training. I already have a large build, so I’m focusing on heart health and overall fitness. That’s where my kinesiologist’s advice is key—he knows what works for me. My favorite workout? Flipping a massive tractor tire for 30 yards!
LM: Any short- or long-term goals?
YM: Some people aim for marathons or cycling challenges. For me, I'd love to do a Spartan Race or a triathlon—not an Ironman, though, that’s for high-endurance folks. I’m more about short bursts of raw effort. A full marathon isn’t for me… though never say never.
LM: As the saying goes, Rome wasn’t built in a day—or without a few 5Ks first. Yanick, we wish to see you often and for many years at Centre Multisports. We’ll be quietly tracking your progress and cheering you on. Thank you for sharing your story!
