I love working out. I love the way it makes me feel, the energy it gives me, and the sense of accomplishment I get after every session. I’ve been active since I was 5, and I started teaching fitness classes at 18. Now, 30 years later, I proudly call myself an exercise enthusiast.
We all know the benefits of exercise—physical, mental, and emotional. So why are most Canadians still inactive or not meeting national activity guidelines?
There are many reasons: lack of time, lack of motivation, or simply not enjoying it.
If just thinking about working out makes you cringe, try these strategies to shift your mindset and finally get moving:
1. Find Your Passion – Do What You Love
Reframe your approach to exercise. Don’t start with what you should do—start with what feels good.
If you're a social person, sign up for group classes, join a recreational sports league, or find a local club.
Prefer solo activities? Go for a run, take a swim, or hop on a bike!
2. Give Yourself Time – Enjoy the Moment
Turning a new behavior into a habit takes time. Behavioral science tells us that immediate experiences tend to outweigh distant rewards—so if it doesn’t feel good now, we tend to avoid it.
Focus on one day at a time. Celebrate the small wins, and enjoy how you feel today—not just the future payoff.
3. Build the Habit – One Step at a Time
Rome wasn’t built in a day—and neither are habits.
Start with small goals, like 15–20 minutes of movement each day. As your routine becomes second nature, increase your time gradually. Even short bouts of activity improve health. The goal is to make exercise a normal part of your lifestyle.
And remember: a 30- to 60-minute workout doesn’t have to happen all at once. Split it into smaller sessions throughout your day.
4. Ask the Pros – It’s Never Too Late
If you’re unsure where to start, reach out to a certified trainer. A professional can help you create a realistic plan, boost your confidence, lower your anxiety, and give you tools to stay consistent.
5. Keep Going – Never Quit
Missed a workout? Don’t worry. Life happens—injuries, busy schedules, unexpected events. What matters is the long-term commitment. Everyone slips now and then.
Come back stronger the next day. Be flexible and adjust your plan when needed. Most importantly: don’t give up.
Exercise doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to be part of your life. Find joy in it, take your time, and keep showing up.
