When he's not training, he's in uniform. And when he's not in uniform, he's training. For the past five years, Philippe Buteau has worked as a firefighter at the Vaudreuil-Dorion fire station. He's always had a passion for sports and trains hard—with a smile on his face.
A Proud Mistral Representative
As a child, Philippe was the kind of athlete every team wanted—whether it was soccer, hockey, or dodgeball, he was always on the move. Volleyball became his long-time sport of choice, taking him to national competitions as part of the now-defunct Mistral team from Cité-des-Jeunes. He even played for the Eastern Canadian All-Star Championship team and continued his athletic journey right up to university level.
"I've always believed that intensity and discipline in training can push you to achieve more than anyone else," says Philippe. He rediscovered this intensity at Centre Multisports, which paved the way for his full-time firefighter career.
Workplace and Training Ground
Before training four to five times a week at the Perfo gym, Philippe worked for several years as a facility attendant at the Centre. He still feels at home there: "Even though I don’t work here anymore, I keep coming back. I love this place and the staff—they helped me become a firefighter. They were supportive when I had to leave for emergency calls, and the whole team would adapt to make it work."
Knowing every corner of the Centre, Philippe greets former colleagues while catching up with fellow firefighters and police officers who often train together. When we met him at Perfo for the interview, he was about to push himself to the limit with a high-intensity workout. "There’s no judgment here," he says. "Perfo isn’t a typical gym where you just admire yourself. It’s about the mindset—train hard, be proud. No matter your level, everyone gives it their all."

A Matter of Life or Death
For Philippe, training took on a deeper meaning once he began his journey to the firehouse on Forbes Street. Beyond the notoriously tough entry tests, physical fitness became a direct link to his performance on the job: "At every fire, no matter how fit I am, I always feel like I could’ve done more. You always have to push further."
He trains at Centre Multisports, plays hockey with colleagues, and keeps active with tennis, golf, volleyball, and weekly bike rides. His drive stems from passion, necessity, and safety: "Sometimes it’s a life-or-death situation. If one of my partners goes down during a fire and I’m exhausted, but I need to get them out—I have to get them out. That edge comes from training. The mindset to push harder is built through effort."
Philippe emphasizes that outdated firefighter stereotypes are long gone. Staying in shape is a career-long goal, but he knows it requires constant commitment: "It’s easy to stay comfortable and stop pushing. I want to keep that mindset and discipline alive."
One Mindset, One Effort
At Perfo, many push, lift, and sweat with purpose. Regardless of their progress, everyone shares the same struggle. "It’s always hard—for the fittest person or the least fit," says Philippe, before heading back to train—joyful, passionate, and determined.
