Why Do I Climb?

Why Do I Climb?

I'm in the most vulnerable position of the route. My legs are shaking, my hands are slowly slipping, and my feet aren’t even on proper holds! I hear my partner yelling, “Allez, allez, allez!” and I make the move.
So why do I ignore every instinct that tells me to climb back down?
Why do I climb?

Ask any climber and you'll get a wide range of answers. Some will tell you it's their excuse to travel. Others do it to stay fit. Some live for the adrenaline rush.
Every reason is valid—and so is mine: I'm afraid of falling.

I’m afraid of falling, and yet I know it's irrational. The gear holding me could support a car, and still, my instinct screams at me to retreat.
But I commit. I reach for the final hold. My feet stay planted, my hands hold firm, and I don’t fall.

In that moment, I’ve conquered my fear—and for an instant, I feel free.

I lower to the ground, flooded with the joy of pushing my limits. I high-five my partner. Now it’s their turn to climb.
Facing my fear every time I climb—that’s my motivation.
What about you? What’s your reason? Come and discover it.
