A fresh chapter has begun for the indoor tennis courts at Centre Multisports.
Originally opened in 2012 with a versatile playing surface, the facility quickly became a hub for tennis. Over time, though, the surface wore out, making gameplay too fast to be enjoyable.
“It felt more like a temporary floor in a hockey arena,” recalls certified coach Étienne Bergeron.
This past August, the concrete base was carefully treated and coated with eight layers of textured acrylic, creating a surface comparable to what’s found at Flushing Meadows. Today, Vaudreuil-Dorion proudly offers four true indoor tennis courts ready to meet the expectations of serious players.
Real Tennis, Real Speed
Before the upgrades, the courts were known for one thing: excessive speed.
“Balls used to fly off the surface,” says Bergeron. “Now, players have more time to react. The surface grips, you can work your spins—it’s a whole different game.”
To guide the redesign, Bergeron analyzed surface speeds from the ATP Masters 1000 tour, ensuring the new courts reflected a medium-slow pace, in line with current pro standards.
“Even pro tournaments have slowed down. That’s the new standard,” he notes.
Test Them Out—With Care
Because the space also hosts large events, extra attention is needed to preserve the new surface.
“It’s gritty, it bites, and it’s delicate. Even dragging something across it can cause damage,” Bergeron explains.
The Centre now plans to host major junior tournaments, welcome sport-study programs, and support a growing interclub team, part of one of the largest women’s doubles leagues in North America.
Above all, Centre Director Gilles Besner wants to see local tennis enthusiasts enjoy the upgrade:
“The goal was to improve the playing experience. We’ve done that. Now it’s time to enjoy it.”
