A Strong End to the Season for the ZVP Opto-Réseau Cycling Club

The 2021 season ended on a high note for the Centre Multisports’ cycling team. After winning the Quebec Cup in the U-17 Espoirs category, Jonathan Hinse (Vaudreuil-Dorion) clinched third overall at the Quebec Provincial Road Championships held in Contrecoeur on August 28–29.

He started with a solid 5th place in the 7.8 km time trial, followed by a thrilling sprint victory in the 29 km criterium, clocking an impressive average speed of 42.8 km/h!

In Sunday’s 62 km road race, Jonathan narrowly missed the breakaway of five riders but still won the bunch sprint — just 2 minutes and 48 seconds behind the leaders. And yes — that road race finished with an astonishing average speed of 45.6 km/h, in the U-17 category!

Other Promising Performances

  • Christophe Massé (Coteau-du-Lac, U-15) finished 8th overall, with strong finishes in all three events (7th, 5th, 10th).

  • Gabriel Séguin (Les Cèdres) made an explosive sprint in the road race, finishing 3rd in the bunch, just behind Hinse.

  • Maude Brazeau (Beauharnois, U-17 Girls) took 5th overall, with her best result being a 3rd place in the individual time trial.

  • A name to watch: Alexia Nolet (St-Polycarpe, U-13), showed great promise despite limited experience. Now part of the Sports-Études cycling program at Centre Multisports, she’s set for major improvement.

ZVP Masters at the Canadian Championships

At the Canadian Masters Championships, held in Victoriaville (Sept 3–5):

  • Véronique Vandersmissen (Coteau-du-Lac, Women’s 45–54) claimed 3rd place in the 65 km road race. On a tough course featuring seven climbs — including the brutal Craig Hill (3.9 km with a 1 km section at 18%) — she stayed with the lead group until the second-to-last wall and crossed the line 2:28 behind the winner.

  • Michel Brazeau, head coach of ZVP Opto-Réseau (Coteau-du-Lac), placed 6th in the individual time trial (Men’s Masters B 45–54), braving hail and intensifying wind. In the 110 km road race the next day, featuring four ascents of Craig Hill, he gave his all and finished 13th, proud of his effort.

Looking Ahead: Canadian Junior and Elite Championships

The season wraps up Sept 10–12 in Beauce with the Canadian Junior and Elite Championships. Representing the club: Clovis Roy (Vaudreuil-Dorion), in his first U-19 season. His dedication in training and remarkable 2021 progression suggest a bright future. Road cycling is a long-term development sport, and Clovis’s focus and discipline are setting him on the right path.
